The position of Accountant General reports to the CFO, who in turn reports to the Managing Director. All are responsible to the Shareholders for the financial performance of Lawsons Auctioneers, in strict accordance with the annual performance to budget and any other forward strategic business plans. The position of Accountant General is responsible for the daily management of internal/external cash flow, the management of the company’s administration and auction management systems, co-ordination of accounting, auction and administration functions. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS : A sound knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply accounting and financial disciplines as required in a national auction business operation. : A sound knowledge of accounting principles and practices, particularly as they apply to the integrity and accuracy of the General Ledger inclusive of computerised accounting systems, analysis, reconciliation and reporting. : Auction house experience and a sound knowledge of Auction house software systems, namely the Internationally re-known Auction software system RFC. : A working knowledge of establishing leasing/hire purchase agreements and processing of insurance claims. : Ability to liaise with financial agencies such as bankers, insurers and financiers (Lease/Hire purchase). : Analytical capabilities to investigate existing systems, administration processes and business trends. : Demonstrated capability and computer literacy in the use Personal Computer systems for Commercial, Accounting and Auction house Database applications : Detailed appreciation of accounting disciplines, organisation delegation, authority & control systems and the relevant levels of responsibilities contained therein. : Well developed interpersonal skills to enable the occupant to co-ordinate the business and treasury functions in co-ordination with the CFO and Managing Director

Task & Responsibilities

  • DUTIES: : Co-ordinate and validate the preparation of timely and accurate financial and management accounting reports. : Prepare, monitor and review both financial and management budgets and cash flow projections. : Manage and oversee the Accounting functions of Debtors, Creditors and Banking, together with the provision of system support for the management and control of the related accounting records. : Manage and oversee the Auction functions of Client Data-Base, Commission, Debtors, Creditors, Banking, Auction Trust Account, together with the provision of system support for the management and control of the related auction records. : Maintain an accurate and up to date inventory register of the company’s assets and provide systems to ensure their protection. : Maintain compliance within Lawsons, of all policies and procedures in strict accordance with the directives set down by the CFO and Managing Director. : Review of Auction Trust Accounts activity to ensure receivables are validated and payments are released under CFO authorisation in accordance with company policy. : Assist the CFO with the accuracy of internal business, financial and management reports as may be prepared outside of the Auction and Accounting systems. : Liaise regularly with the CFO on cash flow, highlighting potential adverse or favourable positions. : Report through operational and management meetings, to the Managing Director, and CFO on operational aspects of the company’s finances, administration, auction program status, resource utilisation, management systems and policy adherence. : Review and report on the financial results of the business on a monthly and per auction basis against budgets, performance indices and forward projections of known events, to the Managing Director and CFO. : Continually review and report on the performance of key expenditure elements of the company and undertake remedial action for negative deviations from annual or auction budget. : Develop strategies to optimise purchasing processes and minimise costs of auction staging, media promotion, property rates, property outgoings, legal, consulting, interest, capital items, overhead accounts. 

Qualification & Experience

  • Formal qualifications preferred with at least 2 years of relevant work experience. Tertiary Accounting degree required.
  • If you do not have formal qualifications, further years of work experience may be required.
