The Job

The duties of the role are not limited to, but may include all or some of the following:

  • Supporting the Biocontainment Team in delivering regulatory excellence across the avian and plant facilities.
  • Effectively collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to enhance service delivery and achieve outcomes.
  • Researching, interpreting and applying complex legislation.
  • Undertaking strategic planning and managing competing priorities to deliver complex project outcomes aligned with business objectives.
  • Preparing reports, briefing papers, Ministerial correspondence and discussion papers.
  • Leading the analysis of performance metrics and benchmarks and reporting the findings to the Director - Biocontainment.
  • Development of risk assessments and compliance activities with a focus on biocontainment, WHS and emergency management.
  • Contributing to policy and process changes while also identifying and implementing innovative initiatives to enhance operational effectiveness and biosecurity management, including biocontainment.
  • Identifying opportunities for property upgrades and developing proposals to improve biosecurity and operational risk management and collaborating with stakeholders, including the Property Team, in planning and implementation.
  • Utilising your technical skills to solve complex problems.
  • Managing staff, the sites complex avian and plant buildings and the maintenance of the services associated with these buildings to ensure that the requirements of all related BC2 and BC3 codes and standards for the quarantine of avian and plant species are maintained.

What we are looking for

Knowledge and experience

The successful applicant will have:

  • proven experience in leading staff, providing strategic direction, supporting teams in a dynamic operational environment and fostering a culture of high performance through effective coaching and mentoring
  • experience with containment facility operations, construction and/or facilities management
  • knowledge or an understanding of the department’s role in delivering national biosecurity operations including knowledge of Australia’s biosecurity system, concepts and relevant legislation
  • experience working in a regulatory environment
  • experience in financial management including budget development, monitoring, reporting and forecasting
  • demonstrated experience in the application of relevant regulatory codes and standards, which include AS/NZS2243.3, DAFF AA 5.2, DAFF AA 5.3 and DAFF 7.10
  • a good understanding and knowledge of mechanical, electrical and other services required to operate and maintain physical containment requirements
  • experience with the use and maintenance requirements of autoclaves.
