A newly created role, resulting from growth, the successful Applicant will be responsible for accountable for leading the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health and safety strategy, systems, and performance across EDF’s Australian operations. This includes all technologies and project phases, from origination through to construction and operations, encompassing projects in renewables, battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped hydro, and transmission infrastructure.
The Director - Health and Safety, will lead organisation wide compliance with company standards, as well as relevant local, state, and federal legislation and industry best practice. Working collaboratively with senior leaders, employees, contractors, suppliers, and regulatory bodies, the Director will foster a proactive safety culture that prioritises risk identification, effective mitigation, and a commitment to ensuring every person returns home safely each day. The position is integral to embedding safety and wellbeing into the company’s culture as it grows its footprint in the Australian energy sector.
Travel to project sites throughout Australia will be required as part of this role, and this position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of renewable energy and contribute significantly to EDF’s low carbon energy mission.
The successful candidate for this role will hold tertiary qualifications in Health and Safety, with at least 10 years' experience leading safety in companies involved in the development, delivery and/or operation of large energy or infrastructure projects. You must have experience with High Voltage Electricity, Dams, renewables and construction environments.
You will need a strong understanding of the energy sector and complex infrastructure construction environments The successful applicant for this role will need the ability to manage competing priorities, meet tight deadlines, efficiently communicate with internal and external stakeholders and work well under pressure.
Day to day, this role is responsible for:
Providing Health and Safety leadership across all workstreams and technologies, and working in an advisory capacity to build and maintain a strong focus on safety culture, physical and psychosocial safety, in accordance with the groups' life saving rules.
Review, develop and implement health and safety policies and procedures, with a focus on legal compliance, practicality and effectiveness, to promote and maintain physical and psychosocial safety.
Identify risks and hazards, maintain risk registers and implement appropriate controls to mitigate risks.
Build a culture of health and safety awareness and active participation when employees identify and report hazards, risks and issues and feel empowered to take an active role in reporting and risk mitigation.
Investigate incidents, accidents and near misses to determine root causes and implement lessons learned to prevent recurrence.
Coordinate with contractors regarding the Health and Safety management system to be used on projects.
Provide health and safety input to procurement and construction contracts.
Review contractor safety plans, SWMS and audit contractor compliance to standards.
Conduct regular inspections, audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Develop health and safety training programs to educate employees on safety procedures, emergency response protocols, safe work methods, directors obligations and other relevant topics
Monitor and report safety performance on projects during development and in execution as well as corporate KPI’s.
