ONI is recruiting for multiple current and possible future vacancies at the EL1 level in our Geopolitical Assessments Division. 

EL1 Analysts apply high-level analytical tradecraft and research acumen to generate assessments and briefings on matters of political, strategic and economic significance to Australia. They help inform national security decision making by providing the Prime Minister and other members of the National Security Committee of Cabinet with intelligence-based analysis and assessments.

Our analysts specialise in delivering insight by rigorously synthesising, distilling and analysing information to meet our customers’ needs. We draw on all sources of information available to the Australian Government including material covertly collected by other intelligence agencies, as well as diplomatic reporting, open-source intelligence and insights we gather from world-leading experts in business, academia and think-tanks.

You would be joining a high-performing analytical team focused on understanding Australia’s global context. Our product is our judgments, which we test rigorously and convey through written reports and oral briefings.

The key duties of the position include:

EL1 Analyst, Southeast Asia 
As a member of the team you will:

  • Assess political, economic, and strategic developments in Southeast Asia, develop clear forward-looking conclusions that are informed by evidence and anticipate challenges and opportunities. 
  • Develop and deliver impactful strategic intelligence products by applying analytical rigour, critical thinking and research skills and using effective planning and prioritisation. 
  • Foster deep collaborative networks in ONI and with a diverse range external stakeholders and partners. 
  • Build a supportive and cooperative team environment that exemplifies collaborative behaviours. 
  • Contribute to team development  by sharing expertise and feedback, supporting continuous learning and empowering others.

EL1 Analyst, China 
As a member of the team you will:
  • Assess political, economic, and strategic developments in China, develop clear forward-looking conclusions that are informed by evidence and anticipate challenges and opportunities.  
  • Develop and deliver impactful strategic intelligence products by applying analytical rigour, critical thinking and research skills and using effective planning and prioritisation.  
  • Foster deep collaborative networks in ONI and with a diverse range external stakeholders and partners. 
  • Build a supportive and cooperative team environment that exemplifies collaborative behaviours.

EL1 Analyst, Pacific
As a member of the team you will:
  • Assess political, economic, and strategic developments in the Pacific, develop clear forward-looking conclusions that are informed by evidence and anticipate challenges and opportunities.  
  • Develop and deliver impactful strategic intelligence products by applying analytical rigour, critical thinking and research skills and using effective planning and prioritisation.  
  • Foster deep collaborative networks in ONI and with a diverse range external stakeholders and partners.

EL1 Analyst, Indo Pacific Powers 
As a member of the team you will:
  • Assess political, economic, and strategic developments in South Asia, Japan and Korea, develop clear forward-looking conclusions that are informed by evidence and anticipate challenges and opportunities.  
  • Develop and deliver impactful strategic intelligence products by applying analytical rigour, critical thinking and research skills and using effective planning and prioritisation.  
  • Foster deep collaborative networks in ONI and with a diverse range external stakeholders and partners. 
  • Build a supportive and cooperative team environment that exemplifies collaborative behaviours.
  • Contribute to team development by sharing expertise and feedback, supporting continuous learning and empowering others. 

EL1 Analyst, Global 
As a member of the team you will:
  • Assess political, economic, and strategic developments in Africa or the Middle East, develop clear forward-looking conclusions that are informed by evidence and anticipate challenges and opportunities.  
  • Develop and deliver impactful strategic intelligence products by applying analytical rigour, critical thinking and research skills and using effective planning and prioritisation.  
  • Foster deep collaborative networks in ONI and with a diverse range external stakeholders and partners. 
  • Build a supportive and cooperative team environment that exemplifies collaborative behaviours.
  • Contribute to team development by sharing expertise and feedback, supporting continuous learning and empowering others. 
Eligibility

Our ideal candidate would have:

  • Advanced subject matter knowledge with a well-developed understanding of the strategic implications of a region for Australia.
  • Demonstrated experience in integrated analysis, evaluating contested information and reaching robust conclusions. 
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and persuasively. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and representational skills, with the ability to build strong internal and external relationships.
  • Proven capacity to coordinate or contribute to collaborative projects, help set priorities and evaluate outcomes, both internally and with other agencies.

Desirable attributes:
  • Proven ability to build and manage a team, its workflows and resources, to mentor staff and provide performance feedback. 
  • Relevant tertiary qualification/s.
