Note: This is only open to Melbourne based applicants ABOUT THE ROLE We are looking for a
highly experienced and engineering-driven Head of Development to lead the design and build of new technology offerings within our
Technology & Rewards Program. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on leadership position, is passionate about infrastructure, and enjoys building scalable systems from the ground up. You'll be responsible for driving the technical vision, enabling best engineering practices, and delivering robust, high-performing systems that support critical business outcomes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the end-to-end design and build of scalable, cloud-native platforms and infrastructure.
- Champion engineering excellence, with a strong focus on quality, maintainability, and extensibility.
- Design and implement event-driven architectures using tools such as Kafka (Amazon MSK), Kinesis, and EventBridge.
- Own and evolve our DevOps practices, including infrastructure as code, AWS environments, and self-service tooling.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of robust CI/CD pipelines and automated testing strategies.
- Partner with product and business stakeholders to deliver technology solutions aligned with strategic objectives.
- Coach and mentor engineers at all levels, fostering a culture of learning and technical growth.
- Manage the technical roadmap, balancing innovation, maintenance, and cost optimization in AWS.
- Ensure applications are built with scalability, performance, and reliability at their core.
- Work closely with the Tech Lead to refine roadmaps, engage stakeholders, and align priorities.
- Provide architecture leadership—ensuring solutions are well-documented, supported, and production-ready.
- Represent engineering in architecture forums and leadership discussions, securing alignment and approvals.
REQUIREMENTS - Proven experience as a technical leader, with a strong engineering background and a track record of building infrastructure from scratch.
- Deep expertise in Java (Java 8+), Spring/Spring Boot, and/or Node.js with TypeScript.
- Strong understanding of event-driven systems and messaging technologies such as Kafka (Amazon MSK), Kinesis, and EventBridge.
- Advanced proficiency in AWS, including core services like VPC, EC2, ECS, RDS, CloudFormation, CloudWatch, and Security Groups.
- Experience building highly available, resilient, and scalable cloud-native systems on AWS.
- Strong understanding of microservices architecture, containerization, and distributed systems.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools including Docker, Jenkins, Ansible, and automated testing frameworks.
- Solid database experience across relational and NoSQL technologies (e.g., MySQL, DynamoDB).
- Strong grasp of API design, integration patterns, and modern development best practices.
- Ability to present technical solutions to architecture forums, councils, and senior leadership for alignment and sign-off.
Nice to Have - Prior experience leading greenfield platform builds or major system overhauls.
- Familiarity with cost governance and optimization strategies in cloud environments.
- Experience in regulated industries or working on mission-critical enterprise systems.
