Primary objective
Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment as part of Territory Pathology, contributing to the provision of an efficient, safe,
clinically responsive, comprehensive diagnostic, analytical and advisory service for clients of the Alice Springs Hospital and
surrounds by actively leading the local pathology technical team.
Context statement
This recruitment process is particularly targeting staff with well-developed keyboard skills, laboratory techniques, specimen
reception, registration and handling techniques. The role supervises the Alice Springs hospital pathology technical workforce that
has duties ranging from phlebotomy to specimen reception and registration, to basic pathology testing and analyser daily
maintenance. The position will require preparation and participation in work rosters, including outside the routine Monday to Friday
work hours. The position maps to CF4 on the Northern Territory Public Sector Capability Framework.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
2. Blood specimen collection, registration, preparation, and transport (Dangerous Goods) intra- and inter-state for referred testing;
basic pathology testing, performance of preventative maintenance, quality control and loading of analysers.
3. Interpret pathology request forms to ensure appropriate specimens are safely collected for requested tests, understanding pre-
analytical variables that can affect accuracy of test results, to ensure clinical utility of the reported result.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Education, Qualifications and Work History: A Certificate III Phlebotomy, Certificate III Laboratory Techniques or other
relevant qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent; or relevant experience in a field of technical work
closely related to the duties of this position is mandatory. A current Dangerous Good Certificate is essential.
2. Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated communication skills to facilitate liaison with patients, clinicians, and other professionals
from a range of backgrounds to advise of patient preparation and specimen collection requirements for pathology tests.
Keyboard skills with minimal data entry errors are required. Knowledge of basic human anatomy, with specific understanding
of blood collection sites; Basic first aid, in particular addressing possible fainting and seizures during or after specimen
collection; Demonstrated laboratory skills to complete simple testing and other pathology laboratory duties are required.
