About Austin Health Pathology

Austin Health Pathology is committed to providing high quality patient care through routine and complex diagnostic services, expert advice and support for teaching and research.

The Pathology department is committed to promoting the highest levels of sample results for our patients. We support our local health care facility, Echuca Regional Health as well as our point of care site at Cohuna and the general public through our outpatient collection center. We are part of the Austin Health network which has recently undergone a regional expansion into the Loddon-Mallee region which includes laboratories in Mildura, Swan Hill and Shepparton as well as Echuca.

About the role

This is a Grade 1 Medical Scientist role to support our core Laboratory disciplines of Haematology, Biochemistry and Transfusion. This role is based in Echuca, a border town based 3 hours north of Melbourne on the Murray River. It is a growing regional centre with excellent facilities, good schools and sporting clubs.

The role is a 9-day fortnight with a requirement to support evenings, On Call and weekend workload.

A regular day will see you:

  • Perform, read and interpret laboratory procedures, tests and assays
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment as per laboratory procedures
  • Comply with Pathology Quality Management
  • Maintain training and competency levels in accordance with documented laboratory methods, procedures and policies
  • Participate in the training and education of scientific and technical staff
  • Maintain relevant scientific and technological knowledge and skills, including attendance at relevant seminars, lectures and conferences and monitoring relevant scientific literature
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of documentation required in the laboratory for methods, procedures and processes

About you

You will be someone who has excellent communication skills, administration skills and attention to detail. You'll bring energy and drive to your work, ability to cope under pressure and troubleshoot any issues that may arise and can work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You’ll further have:

  • Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine degree, or alternative/equivalent science degree recognised by AIMS, AACB, AAM or ASC
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritise and to cope with stressful and emergency situations
  • Ability to cope with continuous change
  • Use of Microsoft Office, and other IT systems 
  • Professional approach to enhance patient care and provision of pathology services
  • Knowledge of NATA and NPAAC requirements and the ability to help maintain compliance with these and the Austin quality system would be advantageous.
