Overview of the Branch and Section:
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Coordination and Planning Branch provides national coordination across Government to support States and Territories to respond to disasters. Working through meaningful partnerships, the Branch seeks to build Australia’s capacity for disaster response, recovery and resilience with an increased coordination and planning capability within the Australia Government.
Directors manage the delivery of work through a Coordination and Planning network that supports State, Territory and local Governments across the full disaster continuum. The Branch comprises of a Strategy and Coordination Section and six state teams (NSW/ACT, QLD, VIC/TAS, SA, WA, and NT) dedicated to AusGov coordination and planning support and partnering with jurisdictions who have lead responsibility under disaster management governance arrangements. The Coordination and Planning Branch supports delivery of national policies and programs and contributes to key NEMA functions, such as the Crisis Coordination Team (CCT).
About the role:
Assistant Directors of state-based teams are key to supporting NEMA’s leadership, coordination and stakeholder management in the jurisdictions. Assistant Directors manage small teams of Coordination and Planning Officers to ensure strong coordination across the Australian Government and with States and Territories, more joined up support for communities and an ability to surge support across the nation when required. Staff within NEMA may be required to work outside of standard business hours in support of operational requirements, particularly during the high-risk weather season. An ability to deploy to disaster impacted areas, when/if required, is part of the role. There is currently one vacant position located in Darwin, NT. This vacancy will be filled through this recruitment process, and a merit pool will be established for this and all other CPO Assistant Director locations (Brisbane QLD; Yeppoon QLD; Darwin NT; Sydney NSW; Wagga Wagga NSW; Adelaide SA; Melbourne VIC; Bendigo VIC; Perth WA and Broome WA) Our ideal candidate: NEMA is looking for emerging leaders who enjoy working in a dynamic, forward-thinking environment. Assistant Directors are expected to demonstrate competence, initiative, good judgement and emotional intelligence within their jurisdiction. Assistant Directors may be required to provide detailed advice, as a conduit between NEMA, Australian Government agencies and the States and Territories to resolve on complex technical, operational and policy matters as they arise.
