The project The European Research Council project "Cultures of the Cryosphere" (CultCryo) investigates the cultural preconditions and consequences of the use of artificial Cooling and freezing technologies in nutrition, health and reproduction, air conditioning, data processing, laboratory research and other everyday practises. A globally networked system of cold stores, nitrogen tanks, cold chains and climate-controlled rooms now sustains the global use of artificial cold, fundamentally restructuring life on both a biological and social level. Despite its far-reaching socio-ecological effects, this enormously energy-intensive planetary "cryosphere" has not yet been systematically researched. This interdisciplinary research project aims to critically analyze a complex global phenomenon and identify possible alternatives for a more sustainable future of dealing with artificial cold. The CultCryo project consists of four international research groups at the Technical University of Darmstadt, the University of Paderborn, the University of Duisburg-Essen, and the Australian National University Canberra, as well as three participating project partners at the University of Hamburg, the University of Halle-Wittenberg and the Institute for Social-Ecological Research Frankfurt. It has an overarching budget of 10 Millon Euros. Position overview Your tasks Your role as project manager will be to lead the operational management of the research team at ANU, to coordinate the collaboration between the four PIs, the international research teams and their university administrations, and provide strategic and administrative support to the overall project, where required. You will oversee and manage the organizational and financial aspects of the ERC’s project requirements and communicate with scientific, administrative, publishing and financial interlocutors. You will work together closely with the head project manager of CultCryo, who is located in Darmstadt, Germany. The focus of your position will be the management of the research team at ANU, which engages primarily in ethnographic fieldwork in different global regions, as well as the coordination of project activities taking place in Australia. Your profile Required project and budget management and coordination skills, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and build stakeholder relationships, are outlined in Selection Critieria the Position Description. While not mandatory for applying for this position, it will be considered desirable and advantageous if applicants are also proficient in German, have experience coordinating EU projects, have experience in interdisciplinary research in the social sciences and humanities, or familiarity or affinity with the topic of the CultCryo project.
