About UQU 

The University of Queensland Student Union (UQU) is a not-for-profit organisation that provides advocacy, representation and support to all students enrolled at the St Lucia and outlying campuses. UQU values passion, respect, honesty and integrity. Our main objective is to create the ultimate campus experience for the University community by actively promoting a positive, fun, healthy and supportive culture. This is a unique organisation, operating numerous food, beverage, entertainment and retail outlets on St Lucia campus, as well as Student Advocacy and Support, and student clubs and societies at St Lucia and Gatton Campuses. UQU has a forever-changing environment employing over 150 staff. 

UQU is run by students, for students. UQU Office Bearers are elected annually by the student body for a term of one year. Almost 50 positions are elected by a vote of the student body, conducted across UQ Campuses during the first week of October.

About the Role

The UQU requires a suitably experienced and qualified professional to oversee the UQU Student Elections. The Returning Officer is responsible for coordinating the electoral process for the UQU Student elections and by-elections, ensuring they are carried out in a fair and transparent manner in accordance with the Union Policy, Constitution and Regulations. This position operates with a high degree of independence and administers a comprehensive set of electoral regulations.

The position is more intensive over September and October, however will also include occasional small elections over a period of approximately 12 months. The successful candidate will coordinate with and supervise the Assistant Returning Officers and Poll Clerks to assist with the electoral process.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Experience in running elections for Associations or similar.

  • Highly developed skills in electoral processes, counting optional preferential proportional ballots for multi member positions.

  • The ability to interpret and enforce electoral regulations, and make sound judgement under pressure.

  • Must not be a member, have been a member in the last 5 years, of a political party in Australia, or be a person who is or was, or has nominated or seconded, a candidate in the current or a previous Election.

  • Good communication skills are essential.
