Rural General Practitioner

The Hunter Medical Practice located in Muswellbrook, Denman, and Merriwa, is very excited to offer an excellent opportunity for at least 1 or more GPs to join our vibrant team. Muswellbrook is approximately 250km, Denman 260 km and Merriwa is approximately 310km Northwest form Sydney and a pleasant three- and half-hour scenic drive. 

All towns are in the Hunter Valley which is a beautiful tourist area in country NSW. These towns are popular for the mining, dairy and wine industries. The best thing about these towns is the lovely community and the support surrounding the GPs who work here. 

Hunter Medical Practice is very well supported by a Practice Manager, Registered Nurses, and several receptionists. All our practices are fully computerised and are 30 minutes away from each other; we utilise Best Practice software which is very user friendly. We have mixed billing with pensioners and children under 16 years of age been bulked billed, while the rest of our patients are charged privately. At present Dr Noman Jawaad, who is a principal GP, has three other doctors working with him and has a long patient waiting list that has made the practices extremely busy as we have a large patient database.  Appointed Doctor is well supported and will receive a rural incentive as well because all our practices are under DPA (District of priority Area) and MMA 4 and 5 classifications.

VR And non-VR both types of candidates well come. Our practice in Muswellbrook is privately owned while Denman and Merriwa are within the towns MPS’s these MPS (Multiple Purpose Services) are town hospitals, MPS provide various services like physiotherapy, dentistry, hearing tests, women’s health, children’s health, social workers etc. The appointed doctor is strongly advised to apply for VMO (Visiting Medical Officer) rights to work in the attached hospitals and be on call for emergency department, see nursing home and hostel patients but this role is not compulsory. All x-rays and scans facilities are referred to the nearby towns of Muswellbrook and Scone. Our closest referral hospitals are Maitland, Newcastle, and Tamworth. Position in Muswellbrook and Denman are MM4, and Merriwa is MM5 under the rural scheme.

Benefits

Full-time/Part-time: Full-time - annual salary and hours per week for the nominated GP as specified in their contract. 

•  Other Skills Required:  A NSW driving licence and own car is essential. Appointed doctor would be required to drive between all three practices as part of the contract, according to the provided roster.

Task & Responsibilities

The applicant would be expected to attend to acute and chronic medical conditions that normally present to general practice, and this would include children and adults. 

The technical procedures would include history taking, clinical examination and management.

Specific clinical skills that are routinely required are:

1: Basic wound and burns care.

2: ECG and interpretation and pathology collection.

3: (Desirable) skin excision of benign and small malignant tumors and lesion.

4: Suturing of lacerations, cryotherapy, intra-articular injections, aspiration of cysts, abscess drainage, management of uncomplicated fractures, pap smears.

5: Appropriate referral to specialists.

6: Immunizations.

7: Management and patient education of chronic diseases e.g. asthma, diabetes, weight management and cardiovascular.

8: Audiogram interpretation.

9: Nebulizer use, deliver oxygen in the medical practice through mask and nasal prompts.

10: Intravenous access and setting up a fluid line in the medical practice.

11: Antenatal care screening/antenatal care/postnatal care.

12: Health risk assessment.

13: To practice Preventative (men’s health check, women’s health check, children health check etc.) and opportunistic medicine.

14: Insurance medical, driving medical and also work cover claims.

15: Assessment and management of appropriate medication i.e. resolution if inappropriate historical polypharmacy.

16: Mental health examination and treatment. Evaluating, managing and referring psychiatric patient.

17: Women Health care.

18: Pediatric care.

19: Aged care.

20: Current driving license.

21: To have their own transport.

We expect excellent history taking skills from the appointed GP, enable to order appropriate investigation, give the appropriate diagnosis and advise appropriate management plan to the patient.

Patient care is extremely important for us and we expect exceptional patient approaching skills, excellent communication with the patient and our staff.

Qualification & Experience

We are looking for a general practitioner with a minimum 2 years’ experience. A doctor who has general registration and even hasn’t had any Australian GP experience can still apply as Dr Noman Jawaad is very experienced and will train the appointed doctor from LEVEL 1 and help them in getting their fellowship in General Practice. Doctors can be appointed for Hunter Medical Practice under various programs like PFP/RDN, FSP/RACGP, RVTS, ACCRM etc. and our friendly Team and Dr Jawaad himself will help the new doctor to join and advise what program will suit them.

• Qualifications 

The applicant is required to have undergraduate training equivalent to a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree. It would be preferable if the person had General Practice experience and hospital training covering general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics. 

Eligible for registration with the medical Board of Australia and able to get provider number that attracts VR (Vocation registration) or Non -VR Registration.
