About the Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Senior Payroll Officer to join our Finance team and help shape a high-performing, people-first culture. As our Senior Payroll Officer, you will be the go-to expert for all things payroll, ensuring our people are paid accurately and on time, staying compliant with Australian regulations, and delivering service with integrity and professionalism. You will work cross-functionally with key teams, using data to enhance decision-making and contribute to our strategic goals. You will take a proactive, advisory approach, keeping the business informed of changes, supporting leadership with insights, and constantly improving payroll processes and service delivery.
This role can be based at either our Melbourne or Sydney offices, with part-time hours to suit you (e.g. 3 days per week or part days over the full week) and hybrid working.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll:
- Ensuring the accurate and timely preparation of the payroll process, including calculation of employee’s earnings, taxes, additions and deductions, variations, leave, and processing of payments, payroll tax, superannuation and Workcover requirements.
- Prepare detailed reconciliations relating to all aspects of employees pay and leave to ensure accuracy before submission.
- Manage the preparation of all State and Federal tax obligations including PAYG tax, payroll tax and superannuation contributions.
- Adhere to policies, standards, governance, processes, systems and SLAs (Service Level Agreements) to ensure management accounting and audit responsibilities are met, as required under financial services legislation and relevant regulatory requirements.
- Work with the Financial Planning & Analysis Lead to prepare Budgets and Reforecasts and carry out variance analysis and ad hoc FTE modelling.
- Ensure all payroll processes and policies are documented, up to date and accessible, and consider ongoing improvements.
Expertise & Advice:
- Prepare and present payroll metrics and data providing key insights to the People & Culture team and Executive Leadership Team and collaborating with key stakeholders to enhance the employee experience.
- Actively manage the Payroll Inbox, responding to employee queries and resolving payroll discrepancies in a timely and confidential manner.
- Proactively communicate and provide payroll advice and education to employees in relation to pay issues, award and legislative changes, company policies and system updates, ensuring consistency, timeliness and high-quality service.
- Assist the Finance team with additional projects, as required

- Leverage external relationships to maximise efficient use of resources and act in the best commercial interest of MIPS.
- Deliver operational processes and business outcome deliverables in line with MIPS risk management and compliance frameworks and relevant regulatory, fraud control, audit and compliance requirements including delivery of internal audit requirements.
- Perform quality control audits to ensure accuracy.
About You
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
- Right to work in Australia (unrestricted)
- Experience working in a customer or member-based environment.
- Have excellent understanding and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior payroll function, including advanced knowledge of Australian payroll and the application of various regulations.
- Solid bookkeeping and accounting skills.
- Advanced knowledge of general payroll practices, procedures, operations and legislation.
- Advanced knowledge of payroll applications.
- Strong project management skills including the implementation and rolling out of training to employees.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport.
- People management skills to coach and mentor staff.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and building strong working relationships.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to look for alternative solutions and implement.
- Strong skills in organising and planning.
- Strong skills in Excel. Self-sufficient in use of digital tools, such as Microsoft suite of applications (Outlook email, calendar, PowerPoint, Word and Teams).
- A continuous learner with the ability to remain abreast with the constantly changing MIPS environment.
- Industry certifications within the payroll domain.
Highly Desirable:
- Experience working in an APRA regulated environment.
- Banking, Finance, Insurance Award experience.

- Tertiary Qualification in (Accounting, Commerce, Business).
