Primary objective

To assist teachers in implementing educational programs for students aged 12-18 years who have severe intellectual and/or multiple and

profound disabilities and provide feedback to teachers to allow program modification and accurate assessments to be made.

Context statement

Palmerston College is a dual campus secondary college with an enrolment of approximately 1200 students. Our college aim is to inspire,

motivate and challenge students for successful futures. Students transition into secondary education at Palmerston College based on their

stages of schooling: Years 7 to 9 Campus (Belyuen Drive) and Years 10 to 12 Campus (Tilston Avenue). Our curriculum is guided by the

Australian Curriculum and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) for senior years students. We provide tailored experiences

for students based on their learning and wellbeing needs and through dedicated programs such as a Flexible Learning Centre, Special

Education Centre, Clontarf, and Stars. The 7-9 Campus is a modern, purpose-built facility while the 10-12 Campus features specialised

teaching and learning spaces to deliver senior years curriculum supporting academic and vocational pathways. The College has dedicated

teams of secondary teachers, support staff and executive members located on each campus.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Work collaboratively with the Special Education Centre’s staff to assist in the planning, preparation, implementation, and assessment

of individualised educational programs including effective strategies for students with profound hearing loss.

2. Effectively communicate with students, families and work colleagues whilst maintaining confidentiality

3. Prioritise and perform work tasks in a reliable manner, both as a team member and independently whilst adhering to school and

department policies

4. Provide ongoing feedback regarding the progress of individual students and contribution to the programming.

5. Assist with the supervision and instruction of students in classrooms, within one to one and small group situations as identified by the

SEC PLT Leader and in extra activities including excursions, camps and during recess and lunch as required.

6. Manage and complete a range of administrative tasks including word processing, data entry, photocopying, bookbinding, laminating,

classroom displays and SAMS entry in a timely manner.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated successful experience working with students with learning support needs to provide learning opportunities and

recognised interventions to address deficits in areas such as communication, self-regulation, social/interpersonal skills, and functional

academic skills.

2. Demonstrated ability to assist with students learning, educational progress and inclusion of students with hearing impairments or the

ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.

3. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and successfully develop effective partnerships with students,

parents, and colleagues.

4. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work successfully independently and as part of a team,

exercising sound judgement.

5. Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to show empathy, patience and work effectively in a dynamic and challenging

environment.

6. Current first aid qualifications or the ability to be able to obtain one.

Desirable

1. Certificate/ Diploma in Auslan or similar

2. NT Drivers Licence (and additional LR licence) or the ability to be able to obtain one.
