About the Role

Townsville City Council is seeking an experienced communications professional to lead its Communications team. As Team Manager Communications, you’ll play a critical role in shaping how Council connects with the community — ensuring messages are clear, timely, and aligned to Council’s values and strategic direction.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for the planning and delivery of internal and external communication, marketing, and engagement strategies. You'll lead a team that creates compelling content, supports key initiatives, manages reputation, and enhances community understanding of Council’s services and priorities.

You’ll collaborate closely across departments to champion our purpose of Growing Townsville and to deliver the Corporate Plan in consultation with the Townsville Community.

About You

You're an experienced communicator who thrives in fast-paced environment. With at least 10 years’ experience in a similar role, you bring a contemporary understanding of communications across digital, traditional, and owned channels.

You know how to adapt messaging for diverse audiences and create meaningful, engaging content that supports organisational goals and strengthens community trust.

As a collaborative and motivational team leader, you will:

  • Guide, mentor an inspire a high-performing team
  • Confidently manage complex issues, sensitive topics, and reputational risks
  • Deliver proactive, impactful communication campaigns that enhance Council’s image, foster civic pride and connect with community priorities

You’re also highly organised and outcomes-driven — able to balance competing deadlines and shifting priorities without compromising on quality or accuracy. You lead with integrity, communicate with influence, and understand the value of clear, timely, and transparent communication in building community confidence.

* The Council contribution to employees' superannuation for contributing employees shall be 13.5% of the employees' ordinary time earnings subject to the employee contributing a minimum of 6% of their ordinary time earnings.
